UN, Brazil, and UNESCO Forge Alliance Against Climate Change Misinformation

Announced at the G20 Leaders Summit in Rio de Janeiro in November 2024

In a bid to tackle the growing threat of climate change disinformation, the Brazilian government, the United Nations (UN), and UNESCO have launched the Global Initiative for Information Integrity on Climate Change.

Announced at the G20 Leaders Summit in Rio de Janeiro in November 2024, the initiative aims to strengthen research and actions to combat disinformation that hampers urgent climate action.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the need for collaboration to fight climate disinformation, highlighting its impact on global efforts to tackle the climate crisis.

The initiative will create a Global Fund administered by UNESCO, which will finance in-depth research into climate disinformation and help promote evidence-based solutions.

It is also set to support communications campaigns leading up to COP30 in Brazil in November 2025, aiming to counter false narratives and encourage informed climate action.

Countries like Chile, Denmark, France, Morocco, Sweden, and the UK have confirmed their participation, along with key UN entities such as UN Climate Change and the World Meteorological Organization.
