BCCI will Review Impact Players Rules, Two Bouncer
Apart from the much-discussed impact player rule, the Board
of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is currently stuck on another crucial
playing condition from previous home and away Indian Test series. Indian Premier
League (IPL) seasons - the second bouncer clause. The BCCI is undecided on
whether to continue with these two rules or not, and there are indications that
it is considering reviewing them. These rules are specifically for the men's
Twenty20 inter-state competition, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT).
The two-bouncer rule was introduced in domestic cricket last
season, followed by the IPL, when a second bouncer in an over was effectively
used. In international cricket, only one bouncer is allowed. The rule was
largely welcomed by the cricket fraternity across the country, especially
during the IPL, but it is understood that the rule is under review. The
decision to include these rules in SMAT or not will impact their continuation
in IPL.
The persistent dilemma is why BCCI is yet to share the
playing conditions for SMAT despite earlier stating that they will be
communicated soon. It has been over three weeks since BCCI released those
rules, guidelines and playing conditions for other upcoming domestic events of
the season.
Playing Conditions; Men's Multi Day; Men's One Day; Women's
Multi Day; Women's One Day; Women's T20; Women's Under-15" with a note
that said; "Men's T20 playing conditions will be shared soon." The
SMAT competition will begin in November.
The main issue is the impact player rule, which remains a
divisive topic within the cricket community. Recently, Zaheer Khan expressed
support for the rule, although many players and coaches have contrary views.
"There is a debate about the impact sub rule. I want to say on record that
I am all for it. It has definitely given opportunities to many uncapped Indian
talents. This is something you will see in the mega auction when teams look at
them."
"As far as all-rounders are concerned, right now there
is no place for half an all-rounder because of the impact sub (rule). But if
you are a true all-rounder, nobody can stop you. There will always be value
addition with the ability to play with the bat and ball," Zaheer said
during the Lucknow Super Giants event in Kolkata recently.
Recently, when asked about this, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah had
said that a decision will be taken soon in this regard and information will be
given about it.
