Dawid Malan Retires From International Cricket

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Wednesday (August 28) announced that Dawid Malan has retired from international cricket. He retired after scoring 1,892 runs in T20Is (62 matches), 1,450 in ODIs (30 games) and 1,074 in Tests (22 matches). He is the second English batsman after Jos Butler to score a century in all three formats of the game in international cricket.

A late-emerger, Malan set the stage on fire in his debut match - a T20I against South Africa in 2017 - where he smashed 78 off just 44 balls. He soon made his Test debut but had a below-par showing. However, in the 4-0 defeat against Australia in 2017-18, he scored his only Test century at the WACA in Perth.

In 2020, he reached the pinnacle of the ICC Men's T20I Rankings, ranked No. 1. A few months later in 2021, the left-hander became the fastest player to reach 1,000 runs in the format in just 24 innings.

Speaking to the Times, the 37-year-old was disappointed with his return to Test match cricket, having not been able to return to the Test team since the fifth Ashes Test in Hobart in 2022, but was happy with his exploits in the limited-overs format. There were times when I played well but in between I just wasn't good enough or consistent enough, which was frustrating because I felt I was a better player than that. Still, I exceeded all expectations of myself in the white-ball format."

Malan credited his former captain Eoin Morgan for supporting him at the international level and giving him the confidence he needed. "Eoin was brilliant at blocking out the noise and silencing it. If something was being written or said, he would openly support me. He would tell me, 'If there is anything wrong with the way you play, I will be the first one to tell you.''

He ended his international career in nov 2023 played last game against Pakistan in ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.
