Dwaine Pretorius Stars As Guyana Clinch Last Ball Thriller
The second consecutive match in the 2024 edition of the Caribbean Premier League ended on the last ball, when Dwaine Pretorius led Guyana Amazon Warriors to a 3-wicket win over ABF at Antigua in North Sound at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.
Chasing 169 to win, 16 runs came off the last over. Pretorius helped the Warriors to victory by hitting Mohammad Amir for three fours and a six off the last ball.
After Gudakesh Moti fell early, Rahman Ullah Gurbaz led the Warriors to victory by hitting two sixes in an over off Shamar Springer. But Imad Wasim ended his innings by dismissing Gurbaz off a slog sweep.
The Warriors managed only 41 runs in the powerplay and were 68/3 at the halfway stage, with Shimron Hetmyer being dismissed by Wasim for 19 off 21 balls, while he had hit a four and a six off Fabian Allen. Azam Khan was hit by a short ball from Springer and the ball hit the stumps.
Keemo Paul and Shai Hope hit a six each, but the Falcons were striking at regular intervals, with the former getting dismissed off Keemo Paul.
Romario Shepherd and Hope hit a six each off Chris Green in the 17th over, but Hope was soon dismissed for 41.
Amir, who had bowled a maiden and conceded only three runs in his first two overs, was hit for two sixes by Shepherd in the 18th over.
Shepherd hit another six off Springer, but was dismissed for 32 off 16 balls. Shamar Joseph's six off Springer took the score to 16, but Pretorius closed out the score in the final over.
Earlier, after being put in to bat, the Falcons lost Teddy Bishop early, following which Fakhar Zaman and Kofi James put together a 74-run stand to provide their side with a good platform.
James hit Shamar for two fours and a six in the fourth over. Imran Tahir also got off to an expensive start, hitting two sixes off Zaman in a boundary, taking the Falcons to 61/1 at the end of the powerplay.
Both batsmen continued to hit regular boundaries, until Moti came in in the 10th over and dismissed James for 37.
At 86/2 after 10 overs, the Falcons had a good base, but Moti's brilliant bowling performance helped the Warriors restrict the opposition in the 11-17 over period.
Only 43 runs came from those seven overs as Moti took 3 for 25, including the wickets of Sam Billings and Jewel Andrew.
Zaman was dismissed by Pretorius for 40 off 33 balls, leaving the responsibility on Wasim to provide a good finish for the Falcons.
Wasim smashed three fours off Shamar in the 18th over, a six off Pretorius and two fours off Shamar in the final over as his 21-ball 40 took the Falcons close to 170.
