Rahul Dravid was officially confirmed as the head coach of Rajasthan Royals on Friday (September 6).
Dravid recently
completed his tenure as the head coach of the senior men's Indian team and
ended his tenure by winning the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the
USA.
He played and captained the team between 2011 and 2013
before stepping into the mentor role for the 2014 season.
Dravid also served as the mentor of the Delhi Daredevils
before leaving his IPL positions after being named as the coach of the India A
and Under-19 teams.
That path eventually led him to coach the senior men's
Indian team from 2021. At the Royals, Dravid will work in close synergy with
Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara, who has served as the coach for the last
four years.
Rahul is one of the greatest players to have played the
game, but what he has achieved as a coach over the last decade is
extraordinary.
The attributes he possesses as a coach to nurture talent and
enable them to consistently perform at the highest level will enable Rajasthan
Royals to challenge for the title going forward," Sangakkara said.
I have already had some meaningful conversations with him
about his vision for this team, and he is keen to deliver results for the
Royals.
I am delighted to be back at the franchise that I have called
home for the last many years He said, After the World Cup, The Royals are the
perfect team to do I feel this the ideal time for me to take on another
challenge.
The progress the franchise has made over the last few years
has involved a lot of hard work and deliberation from Manoj, Jake, Kumar and
the team.
Given the kind of talent and resources we have, this is an
exciting opportunity for us to take this team to the next level and I am
looking forward to getting started.
Dravid, who has
already started working at the franchise, will now be tasked with deciding on
team retention once the rules are made public by the BCCI and then assembling a
team of his choice at the auction.
